A two-semester study of the structure and functions of the organ systems of the human body and how they work together to maintain homeostasis. Designed for majors in health profession programs. Lab required.

Course Activities

To accommodate different learning styles, I will employ a variety of teaching methods in this course. Instructional methods will include lecture, laboratory exercises, in-class discussions, digital self-assessments/study materials using McGraw Hill Connect, viewing supplemental videos, and writing article summary papers.

Interactive Activities (Discussions, Group Work, etc.)

You will be given the opportunity to interact with one another in a variety of ways.  It is very important students take advantage of the interactive activities provided.

Self-Check, Practice, Reflection

There will be a variety of self-assessment activities provided during the semester.  These will be automatically graded and you will have the opportunity to revisit the assessment as often as you wish.

Assessments (Exams, Projects, Papers, etc.)

LECTURE: AP II will have a total of five major exams and a comprehensive final exam. Each exam will consist of primarily higher-level multiple choice questions but they will also include a number of other question styles such as labeling and open responses.

LABORATORY: The laboratory meetings are vital to your success in this course. Exercises are to be filled in as much as possible before coming to the lab meeting. This will help you understand the concepts behind each exercise. Laboratory attendance will be taken at various times during the lab time and if you are not present when roll is taken, you will be counted absent. Generally, you may not make up the lab. There will also be laboratory exams specifically for lab material/exercises. Generally, the lab exams will be worth less than 100 points each. Lab scores are an integrated part of all other scores for calculating your final grade. 


You WILL NEED A LABCOAT or long-sleeved shirt and you MUST wear shoes that cover your entire foot (NO SANDALS)! You must also provide for yourself several pairs of gloves for use in certain lab exercises. YOU MUST PROVIDE YOUR OWN GLOVES! You must wear a face mask and a face shield or safety glasses at all times!

OTHER ASSIGNMENTS:   There will also be homework assignments such as films to watch, current events written reports, and McGraw Hill Connect assignments.

TESTING PROCEDURES: All major exams are pre-announced.

  1. Tests given at scheduled times will be taken from class notes, class assignments and any concurrent text or lab material.
  2. Each student will be required to have five lecture test grades. A comprehensive exam may be substituted for ONE missed exam and also count as your final exam grade. IT IS NOT WISE TO MISS AN EXAM.
  3. If a second exam is missed, a grade of ZERO will be recorded.
  4. If for some reason you have an excused absence approved by me (such as a court date on exam day), you may take the exam on an earlier than scheduled date. The format of the exam may be oral or written depending on time constraints.
  5. There will be NO cellphones, audio devices, or smartwatches allowed during testing. NO EXCEPTIONS.

At the end of the course, the overall numerical grade will be converted from a numerical scale to the following letter grade scale as indicated in the Grading Scale.

Evaluating Student Work (Rubrics)

Rubrics may be provided for some assessments such as written papers and reports. The rubrics will provide guidelines for you to follow in completing assessments. All other student work including self-assessment activities are objective in nature and will be marked as correct or incorrect.  Any essay style questions will have comments added on the exam.

Late and Make-up Work

Due dates are provided in the schedule and D2L course calendar.  No late work will be accepted. See exam procedures above for the policy on make-up exams.

I will typically respond within:

Course Policies

The National Park College Student Handbook rules and regulations will be enforced in this class at all times.

Testing Policy: There will be NO cellphones, audio devices, or smartwatches allowed during testing. NO EXCEPTIONS.


You must attend 85% of class time in order to remain in the course. In this course, 15% is 12 hours of lecture and/or lab time being missed.  You MUST communicate with me via D2L messages concerning ANY missed class time. Communication is key where attendance is concerned. Two late arrivals to class will result in one absence being recorded.  


Time and Effort Commitment:  The key to success in this class is persistent effort.  You should carefully consider your time obligations before committing to this course.  According to federal guidelines, one hour of classroom instruction should be accompanied by two hours of out-of-class student work each week. You should therefore expect 12 hours of work per 4 credit hour class regardless of the mode of delivery (i.e., web-enhanced, blended, or online). 

Inclement Weather / D2L Downtime: When NPC is out of class due to weather, our class will continue as set in the calendar. The only time this will be modified is in the case of an unplanned D2L downtime. If D2L goes down unannounced, any assignments that are due during that time will be reopened for one day. D2L down time that is announced by the NPC Online office will need to be observed by the learner and assignment submission modified by the learner if it interferes with a final due date/time for any assignment. 

Communication Policy: I am here to help you understand the material.  I will closely monitor all online communications.  My aim is to have a learning community where we can all share knowledge, ideas, and experiences – and thus learn from one another.  I may give you information periodically through D2L Announcements, D2L or discussion.  For your own benefit, please learn how to use these resources and monitor them closely to keep informed. You will be held responsible for all of the information I provide. Below is a guide for how you can get your questions answered quickly.    

LMS E-mail: Use the email built into the LMS for private discussion between the two of us.  We will use this instead of NPC webmail.  This keeps all communication within the course and provides me with a notification when you have posted something and vice-versa.  You may also use the LMS instant messaging feature anytime you are online and have a question and see that I am online too.

Expectations for Written Assignments:  All written assignments should be completed using APA format or the format of your discipline.  This is a class of professionals so the assumption is you can spell and use proper grammar and punctuation.  Formatting, grammar, punctuation and spelling are a component of all assessments in this course.

NPC Policies

Board Policy 6.600 -- NPC Attendance Policy

Instructions to Students regarding attendance:

  1. Students are responsible to know and comply with syllabus attendance and coursework guidelines in each of their courses.
  2. Students are expected to meet all attendance requirements and engage in coursework as outlined in the course syllabus. Failure to maintain satisfactory course participation is the equivalent of excessive absenteeism and may result in the student being dropped. To maintain good-standing in online courses, students are expected to submit assigned coursework in a timely manner per instructor requirements.
  3. Students participating in athletics or a college-sponsored extracurricular activity are required to communicate scheduled absences ahead of time and to make arrangements with their instructors regarding missed coursework, including exams. The instructor determines how academic work associated with a college-sponsored absence(s) can be completed by the student.
  4. Failure to meet a course’s attendance policy does not mean a student will be automatically withdrawn from a course. Students seeking to withdraw from a course should do so either online through the student’s account or in person by visiting Student Affairs.
  5. Students who do not withdraw from a course by the published Academic College Calendar withdraw date will receive an earned grade.
  6. A faculty member may administratively withdraw a student from a course, including online courses, any time during the semester up to the published Academic College Calendar withdraw date if attendance does not meet syllabus guidelines.
  7. Students will not be administratively withdrawn by faculty after the published Academic College Calendar withdraw date except in life-changing circumstances or as a result of military orders.
  8. The withdrawal of a student from all courses may require the student to repay all or a portion of the financial aid received as calculated by the Financial Aid Office in accordance with government grant guidelines.
