Course Description

Automotive Service Technology students will receive on-the-job training associated with the automotive area to reinforce classroom instruction. Supervision will be provided by the classroom instructor in conjunction with the internship site personnel.

Prerequisites:  Technical Certificate in Automotive Service Technology or completion of the 2 Year High School Program or Instructor Approval

Automotive Services Technology Program Purpose and Objectives


The mission of the Automotive Service Technology program is to assist students in gaining employment in new car agencies, independent repair facilities, automotive supply stores, service stations and as fleet mechanics. The program is certified through the ASE Education Foundation.

Program Level Objectives (PLO):

Students who successfully complete the program of study in Automotive Service Technology will be able to:

  1. Identify problems effectively and efficiently using available resources. (GEO 2,3,4)
  2. Evaluate situations creatively using critical thinking skills. (GEO 1,2,3)
  3. Research using the internet, manuals, and other appropriate sources to find needed information. (GEO 1,2,3)
  4. Demonstrate work ethics and interpersonal skills congruent with industry standards. ( GEO 1, 4)
  5. Evaluate safe, ethical, and environmentally sound work procedures (GEO 2,4)
  6. Employ proper repair procedures (GEO 2,3,4)

Course Policies

No extra credit opportunities are provided in this course.  Because of the mastery learning nature of the course, there should be no need for extra credit if you take advantage of opportunities to improve on your work.

Course Policies

Attendance:  Regular and prompt attendance will be stressed.  You are expected to be in class and to be prepared for class.  Absences will affect your grade.  Auto Service Technology policy states that a student will be dropped from a class on their 7th hour of absence.  Three tardies equals one absence. Arriving 10 minutes or more late or leaving 10 minutes or more early will be counted as an absence.

Electronic Device Policy

Cellular phones and similar electronic devices such as laptops, tablets, etc. are not to be used in the classroom or lab setting at any time. They should be silenced when in the automotive area due to their disruptive nature and safety concerns. Earbuds and Bluetooth auditory equipment are not to be worn.

A student in violation of the above rule will be counted as absent from the class or lab where the violation occurred.  Repeated violations may result in the student being dismissed from the class or lab with no credit given.

Inclement Weather: In the event of inclement weather the college will notify you of late start times or closure via local television channels, radio, and school email. Please check with these resources to determine if classes will be held when inclement conditions are a potential.

Communication Policy: Students should obtain and be able to receive information via there college assigned email address. Grades and Attendance are accessed via D2L and Oasis software platform.

NPC Policies

Board Policy 6.600 -- NPC Attendance Policy

Instructions to Students regarding attendance:

  1. Students are responsible to know and comply with syllabus attendance and coursework guidelines in each of their courses.
  2. Students are expected to meet all attendance requirements and engage in coursework as outlined in the course syllabus. Failure to maintain satisfactory course participation is the equivalent of excessive absenteeism and may result in the student being dropped. To maintain good-standing in online courses, students are expected to submit assigned coursework in a timely manner per instructor requirements.
  3. Students participating in athletics or a college-sponsored extracurricular activity are required to communicate scheduled absences ahead of time and to make arrangements with their instructors regarding missed coursework, including exams. The instructor determines how academic work associated with a college-sponsored absence(s) can be completed by the student.
  4. Failure to meet a course’s attendance policy does not mean a student will be automatically withdrawn from a course. Students seeking to withdraw from a course should do so either online through the student’s account or in person by visiting Student Affairs.
  5. Students who do not withdraw from a course by the published Academic College Calendar withdraw date will receive an earned grade.
  6. A faculty member may administratively withdraw a student from a course, including online courses, any time during the semester up to the published Academic College Calendar withdraw date if attendance does not meet syllabus guidelines.
  7. Students will not be administratively withdrawn by faculty after the published Academic College Calendar withdraw date except in life-changing circumstances or as a result of military orders.
  8. The withdrawal of a student from all courses may require the student to repay all or a portion of the financial aid received as calculated by the Financial Aid Office in accordance with government grant guidelines.
  9. Only in extraordinary circumstances may a student earn a grade of IP (In Progress) to defer course completion. Please see the Incomplete Grades policy in the Student Handbook located at

Academic Honesty Policy

Class Schedule

The schedule for this course will be made available in the LMS.  The instructor reserves the right to modify the schedule as the semester progresses.

Course Evaluations

Students will be asked to evaluate their instructor and course near the end of the semester. These student evaluations are very important to the improvement in the quality of instruction and course materials. All results are anonymous and shared with the faculty only after the semester is over and grades have been posted.
